"A quiz is a learning experience." With these words Frau Weser (Frau = Mrs.) hands out a quiz and an answer sheet to each student in her German class. When the students have their answer sheets marked up, they step to the 'testing station' (a desk with the PC and BubbleScan), run their answer sheet through the BubbleScan and review their section scores on the computer screen. This information helps them determine which sections of their test needs additional review without telling them specifically which questions were wrong. Students can review their quiz, erase answers, make corrections and return to the testing station until they have reached the teacher's designated Mastery Level.

For one quiz, Frau Weser allowed only 5 attempts recording the last score as the final score for this assignment, which caused the students to work particularly thoroughly. The software also gives the teacher the option to reveal which questions were incorrect after a certain number of attempts or even reveal the answer key. Frau Weser administers a learning quiz about every two weeks. During the quiz period students can refer to their notes and ask questions. Frau Weser uses the opportunity to explain one-on-one. Comments like "I finally get it", "Oh, that's how that works" are common. With the goal of obtaining Mastery Level in sight every student is engaged and active. Questions are asked and real learning takes place. But the benefits are not limited to the quiz period. Frau Weser observed that after the first quiz, students started taking better notes and participating more during regular class as well.

The Learning Quiz is an excellent opportunity for the teacher to review class material in a challenging and engaging way. It is also a posititive experience for the students as they are allowed to rescan their corrected forms multiple times during the quiz period until they eventually reach Mastery Level.
