Here is
how the BubbleScan Score Book was used at the ATA National
Truck Driving
Championship 2007 in
Minneapolis:
1. Equipment Selection and Running Order
2. Written Exam
3. Pre-Trip Inspection
4. Personal Interview
5. Skills Test
6. (Semi) Final Summary, Individual, and Other Reports
7. Finals Skills Test
8. Final Summary Report, Grand Champion, and Finalists' Individual
Reports
Equipment Selection and Running Order
Wednesday Afternoon:
A pre-filled (='pre-slugged') Equipment
Selection Card was handed to each driver. They chose their
equipment
make and model. Senior staff members then sorted through the cards and
put them in the desired running order.
Four stacks of forms (Thursday Course A & B, Friday Course A
& B) were then
fed through the BubbleScan. The Excel-based Score Book assigned a
sequence
number to each record. Once all the cards were scanned, preliminary Running Order
reports were created. After several reviews and minor
modifications, the Running Order reports were printed and posted.
Written Exam
Wednesday Evening:
Each of the 374 drivers received a pre-slugged Written Exam Score Card.
Once
they had bubbled in their answers, the Written Exam Score
Cards were run
through the BubbleScan. The Excel-based Score Book compared answers
against the key we had entered previously, determined the score and
added that score to each drivers record.
Pre-Trip Inspection
Thursday and Friday:
Throughout the competition batches of about 10 Pre-Trip Inspection
Score Cards each were turned in to the command center.
From
within the Score
Book, staff selected the Pre-Trip worksheet and added the new scores
simply by dropping the Score Cards through the BubbleScan.
Personal Interview
Thursday and Friday:
Throughout the competition batches of about 10 Personal Interview
Score Cards each were turned in to the command center.
From
within the Score
Book, staff selected the Personal Interview worksheet and added the new
scores
simply by dropping the Score Cards through the BubbleScan.
Skills Course
Thursday and Friday:
Throughout the competition small batches of Skills Test
Score Cards were turned in to the command center. From
within the Score
Book, staff selected the Skills Test worksheet and added the new scores
simply by dropping the Score Cards through the BubbleScan.
Semi-Final Summary,
Individual, and Other Reports
Friday Late Afternoon:
Once the last Score Cards were turned in and scanned, we ran the (Semi-)Final Summary report.

by the BubbleScan Score Book and posted on the ATA web site.]
To validate scoring we pulled the paper records of the top ten
contestants in each class and compared them to the results reported by
the BubbleScan scoring system. They matched.
We then printed two individual
reports for each driver, filed one copy in each drivers
folder and put the remainder in stacks for each class and sorted by
state. The 'den-mothers' would hand out these copies to the drivers the
next day after the Introduction of the State Champions.
Other reports generated included the Rookie of the Year
report, Team Championship
report, Vehicle
Condition, and Neil
Darmstadter Professional Excellence Award report.
The latter was used by a committee along with other factors
to determine the winner of that award.
Finals Skills Test
Saturday:
In preparation for the finals, 24 additional Skills Test Score Cards
(one for each of the three finalists per class) were filled in by hand
and handed to the judges. Once judges completed the Score Cards,
runners turned them in and staff, added results to the Finals Skills
Test worksheet by dropping the Score Cards through the BubbleScan.
Final Report, Grand Champion,
and Finalists' Individual Reports
Saturday, minutes after the last Score Card
was dropped through the BubbleScan:
With the Score Book now containing the Finals scores, we re-ran the
Final Summary report. and immediately knew the various class winners. [Click here to view the Summary report generated
by the BubbleScan Score Book and posted on the ATA web site.]
Clicking another button in the Score Book calculated the Grand Champion based
on the somewhat complicated formula that the Grand Champion be the
class winner with the highest point differential from his/her
individual Semi-Final Skills Test to the class average Semi-Final
Skills Test.
Lastly, an individual
report was printed for each finalist.

Q & A
How reliable is the BubbleScan Score
Book?
The BubbleScan Score Book created specifically to score ATA truck
driving championships has several built-in error checks that ensure all
data is recorded correctly. Invalid or questionable data cause an error
message to pop up as soon as the form is dropped through the
BubbleScan, prompting the operator to verify the scanned form.
Possible errors are:
- Scanned
driver ID does not match a driver ID in the master list.
- More than one bubble was marked for a
particular
question or score field.
- No
bubble was marked for a particular score field.
Can I get samples
of the Score Cards?
Yes, you can view the Score Cards by downloading the Users
Guide or contact us
and we will mail you printed samples.
Can the BubbleScan system be customized?
Can the BubbleScan system be
customized?
Absolutely. That's what we do. From the forms to the way we capture
data to the report, anything can be customized (for a fee, of course).
What improvements
have been made based on feedback from the field?
The feedback from the our first championship (Reno, Nevada, June 2007)
was to use heavier paper, add some error routines (see previous
questions), and make the overall navigation easier.
When we went to the Nationals a few months later
(Minneapolis,
August 2007) we had implemented those items and walked away with a few
new suggestions:
Further simplify the use, add more details to the driver reports,
integrate the equipment selection, and suggest that judges use a
Sharpie instead of a pencil to mark the score cards.
In 2008 our solution was used in Nevada, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia and at Nationals again. The solution worked well. Other than customizing it to meet each state's requirements we did not make any changes.
Can we get
training or have an Academy Technologies staff at our event?
Yes, on a first-come-first-served basis. We do ask that you cover travel expenses. Please contact us to discuss
your requirements.
We already have a computer-based
system. Why switch?
Dropping a card through the BubbleScan is faster and more
reliable
than capturing data by hand. Also, you may be able to capture and
report more data (i.e. demerits) than with your current solution.
